Travis Scott surprised fans at the MTV Video Music Awards, when he popped up during 30 Seconds to Mars’ sizzling performance of “Walk on Water.”

Led by Jared Leto under a thermal effect, the rock band performed their first new song in approximately four years. Then, without any warning, La Flame emerged for an excerpt of “Butterfly Effect.”

Upon the release of “Walk on Water,” Leto explained the song’s message. “[It] is a song for all of us,” he said. “It’s a song about freedom, about persistence, about change and about fighting for what you believe in. It is a call to arms but also full of all the optimism and hope that is such an integral part of the American dream.”

“Water” is the lead single off 30’s forthcoming album, a follow-up to 2013’s LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS. Meanwhile, Scott is gearing up to release his forthcoming solo LP AstroWorld.
